The life and lessons of a CRE executive
Jeremy Neuer, Executive Vice President at CBRE Group, reflects on his 20+ years in corporate real estate, highlighting key projects like the Bell Works redevelopment, the challenges of balancing client priorities and work-life demands, the evolving metrics driven by co-working trends, and the importance of personal branding through his blog NeuerSpace.
Jeremy Neuer, Executive Vice President, New Jersey Capital Markets at CBRE Group, shares insights from his career in corporate real estate (CRE), discussing major projects, challenges, and the role of personal branding.
CRE is an industry at the forefront of innovation, with evolving tenant and landlord expectations. Managing these expectations and providing clients with the spaces they need is a core challenge.
Neuer's journey in CRE began over 20 years ago. He has worked with tenants across the United States and represented leading landlords in New Jersey. Now specializing in the sale of office and retail assets in the tri-state area, he reflects on his experiences and lessons learned.
On Career Highlights
Neuer is most proud of the trust and repeat business from clients and landlords, which he sees as a testament to his integrity and professionalism. He highlights a significant deal: anchoring Bell Works in Holmdel, New Jersey, with a 340,000 square-foot space for iCIMS. This deal was pivotal in a major redevelopment and attracted other tenants, including WorkWave, due to iCIMS's presence.
On Personal Challenges in CRE
Neuer identifies his biggest challenge as making every client feel like they are the most important. Balancing multiple clients' needs within a single day is demanding, especially as personal responsibilities grow. Achieving work-life balance remains an ongoing challenge.
On Evolving Metrics in CRE
Previously, CRE leaders focused on price per square foot and, later, price per seat and space utilization. The rise of co-working and agile working has changed the landscape, allowing companies to test new markets with minimal commitment. Neuer notes that metrics and strategies continue to evolve, and companies that adapt are better positioned for success.
On Personal Branding and Digital Presence
Neuer started his blog, NeuerSpace, inspired by writers who blend professional topics with personality. The blog became a creative outlet and a way to differentiate himself in the industry. He believes personal branding helps others understand who he is, which can build rapport and trust.
Regarding digital presence, Neuer observes that there is no single right approach. Some successful brokers have no digital footprint, while others leverage social media and online content. Each professional must find the strategy that suits them best.
